Dr. Manhattan, first appearing in Watchmen #1 (1986) published by DC Comics, is the alter ego of physicist Jonathan Osterman.
Born in 1929, Osterman's path was forever altered in 1959 during an experiment gone wrong. While working in a research facility, he was disintegrated within an intrinsic field subtractor.
Instead of dying, Osterman slowly reassembled himself as a being of immense power. Stripped of most of his humanity, he became Dr. Manhattan. He possesses vast abilities including manipulation of matter, energy projection, teleportation, and precognition. His existence dramatically shifts the balance of power in the Watchmen universe, impacting geopolitical events and the lives of other costumed heroes.
His detachment from human emotions and linear time leads to a complex and often detached perspective on the world, making him a powerful but ultimately enigmatic figure.
